My first sun sketches

These are my first attempts at sketching the sun.

The prominences are certainly out of proportion. Obviously because I wasn't using black paper, I struggled to convey the lighter areas on the surface; I chose just to represent them as lighter, squiggly lines.

Both were drawn while viewing through my 10mm Ethos, on a PST. The first was done at about 12.15pm today (19 Oct 2010), while the second was at about 5.50pm.

  1. The way I get a sense of scale with my lunar sketches is first mentally divide up the eye piece into quarters, and put in the largest things very lightly in the right places. Then your other details go in relative to that, keep getting finer and finer, and going back and putting in the smaller details. But - get the big shapes right first because once you start drawing twiddles you naturally want to make them bigger !

They are very cool drawing though !
